1. Weight-Activated Feeders - These feeders work by closing off the feeding ports when squirrels land on or climb on to the feeders. You can also adjust the weight required to close off the ports to keep bigger birds like magpies and crows off of the feeder!
2. Hot Pepper Products - Capsaicin is the compound in hot chili peppers that makes them spicy. Squirrels, mice, deer, and other mammals dislike spicy foods, and therefore, do not like the Hot Pepper products. On the other hand, capsaicin does not irritate or damage the tissues or digestive tract of birds, so they are able to eat Hot Pepper seed and suet without issue.
Note: Caged Feeders are primarily useful for keeping large birds, like magpies and crows, off of your feeders. In Alberta, we get mostly Red Squirrels, which are usually small enough that they can wiggle their way through the outer cage of the feeder. However, if you have larger species of squirrels, like "Black" Squirrels or Eastern Gray Squirrels, the caged feeder may be a solution!
