Capsaicin is the compound in hot chili peppers that makes them spicy. Squirrels, mice, deer, and other mammals dislike spicy foods, and therefore, do not like the hot pepper products. On the other hand, capsaicin does not irritate or damage the tissues or digestive tract of birds, so they are able to eat hot pepper seed and suet foods without issue.
